Wednesday Farmers Market

The Wednesday Farmer’s Market offers locally grown produce along with freshly baked breads and pastries, artisans and craftspeople who help to create a festive market atmosphere for the Lakewood community.  The Market will operate every Wednesday through September 29, 2010 between 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 pm. 

The Market is operated by the North Union Farmer’s Market in collaboration with the City of Lakewood and features vendors who grow their own produce on small, family-owned farms.  Organizers expect up to 15 vendors at each Wednesday’s market.

This new Lakewood Farmers Market will operate on Saturdays beginning June 26 from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM in the City Center Plaza, near intersection of Warren Road and Detroit Avenue. The market will operate every Saturday (except August 7 due to the Lakewood Arts Festival) through October 2, 2010. This market is being organized by a volunteer group, with the support of the City, who saw a need to offer an additional market during the weekend. Their mission is to connect local residents with fresh, local, homemade/handmade/homegrown produce and products while encouraging local entrepreneurship and unify the community through sustainable endeavors.

No Refuse/Recycling Collection-Labor Day Holiday

During holiday weeks, the Division of Refuse and Recycling collects five days worth of garbage and recyclables within the four remaining workdays by working longer days. They do not collect on Saturday or Sunday.

Understand the purpose of a resume, how to develop an e!ective resume and review the general guidelines and parts of a “resume that WILL get results.”

SEPTEMBER 14TH – DEVELOPING YOUR JOB SEARCH PLAN
Explore the importance of having a Job Search Plan. Learn about the general guidelines and key parts for an e!ective Job Search Plan.

SEPTEMBER 21ST – USING THE GRAPEVINE TO GET RESULTS
Learn how to “Use the Grapevine” to get your message out – to get referrals and gain insight into your target market.

SEPTEMBER 28TH - ACE THAT INTERVIEW
Practice your interviewing and receive valuable feedback pertaining to your strengths and area for improvement. Topics to be covers are: Basic Guidelines, Traditional Questions, Behavioral Based Questions and Telephone Interviews.

Heart Saver AED/CPR Certification Class
6:00PM - 9:00PM

The Heartsaver AED Course teaches the basic techniques of adult CPR and how to use an AED. Students also learn about using barrier devices in CPR and giving first aid for choking. The course teaches how to recognize the signs of four major emergencies: heart attack, stroke, cardiac arrest and foreign-body airway obstruction. The scope of this course does NOT include infant (0-12 months) CPR technique.

The cost for the class is $35.00. It must be paid in advance at least one week prior to the class date and is non-refundable. To register, contact Cheryl Behm at Lakewood Hospital, 216-227-2481. Course books are available for purchase prior to or at the class for $14.00 each.

Listening to Lakewood Community Meeting

As part of the Listening 2 Lakewood (L2L) Program, Mayor FitzGerald will hold a community meeting on Wednesday, September 22 at 7:00 p.m. at Garfield Middle School, 13114 Detroit Avenue. In September, the Mayor has been walking the area from Clarence Avenue to West 117th Street between Detroit and Madison.

All Lakewood residents are invited to attend this informative meeting to learn about recent developments within the city including: street repairs, quality control in parks, fiscal stability, and important initiatives including wellness, safety, housing and environmental issues.

This is your chance to be heard and to join the Mayor and his team in building the future of Lakewood. We hope to see you there.
